Falkland Islands flag raised in Milford Haven to mark Liberation Day

On June 14th 2024, a ceremonial raising of the Falklands Flag in Milford Haven was held to honour the legacy of HMS Ardent and its veterans, further cementing the profound bond between the ship's survivors and the town of Milford Haven. The 14th is also celebrated in the Falklands as Liberation Day. It commemorates the liberation of the Falkland Islanders from Argentine military occupation and the end of the Falklands War in 1982.

This relationship between HMS Ardent and Milford Haven was forged in 1977 when Milford Haven adopted HMS Ardent. It stands as a testament to mutual respect and remembrance, particularly in the wake of the tragic events of the Falklands War in 1982 and the loss of 22 lives from the 199 crew of HMS Ardent as well as the Type 21 Frigate.

Memories of HMS Ardent in Milford Haven 1981:

“The bond between Milford Haven and HMS Ardent remains strong, symbolising the town’s support for the Royal Navy and its dedication to remembering those who served and sacrificed. The flag-raising ceremony is a testament to the bravery of the crew of HMS Ardent and the resilience of the community that honours their memory.”

After the ceremony the town Mayor presented the Association with a new plaque and Pete also presented an ARDENT challenge coin to Cllr. Huw Murphy who organised the event as well as shipmate Tom Williams for representing the Admiral.
